Types of Cranes mainly used in Construction Industries
There are various types of cranes used in the construction industries depending on the requirement and the type of construction. A crane is a piece of heavy machinery equipped with cables and pulleys used for lifting and moving heavy objects. Without the use of cranes, the construction of tall buildings and other structures will be very difficult. Modern cranes are designed to lift and move loads ranging from metric tons to megatons making the construction project complete on time. Cranes are also employed in the heavy equipment manufacturing industries and cargo industries. Let us focus on the types of cranes used in construction industries;
1. Jib Cranes
A Jib crane has a horizontal arm that supports a moveable hoist fixed to a verticle structure. A jib crane, also called a tower crane is commonly found at construction sites because it gives an additional lateral movement. The jib crane can also be fitted on the top floors of buildings or on any flat surfaces. The crane works on the concept of weight mechanism where the cable is attached to pull the heavyweights. It can move like an arc up to 180 degrees horizontally.
2. EOT cranes
EOT refers to the Electric Overhead Traveling Crane, also called bridge crane. It consists of a combination of a parallel runway on which the crane rolls. EOT cranes are not commonly found in the construction industry but rather in the manufacturing industries, workshops, and warehouses. The EOT cranes can move only in a horizontal way and to a distance of the length of the parallel runway. A C-hook is a structure that can be attached to the EOT cranes for lifting and moving heavy rolls, bundles, and packs. The EOT cranes attached with a C-hook are called C-hook crane and its movement is called C-hook crane transfer. C-hook cranes are not used at the construction site but at the manufacturing units which supply construction materials.
3. Car Gantry Cranes
These are the simplest form of cranes used for the lifting of medium weight loads and are best suited in warehouses and workshops. They can be easily dismantled and can be transported from one location to another. The legs of the car gantry crane are fitted with small rubber tyred caster wheels making it easily movable on the floor. At the construction site, the car gantry crane is used to lift and move the metallic parts that should be integrated into the structure. It is manufactured for a load capacity from 500 kg to 2000 kgs by most of the crane manufacturers.
4. Mobile cranes
Mobile cranes are fitted on a movable surface, unlike the jib crane. The jib cranes are fixed at a particular point whereas the mobile cranes are fixed on a movable surface usually on a heavy load truck or on a rail. Due to its added advantage of mobility, it can be utilized at various places depending on the requirement from construction to manufacturing to warehouses.
5. Rough Terrain Crane
This type of cranes is designed to carry out load liftings off-road such as at the site where digging is going on and heavy structure needs to be placed at a certain depth of the ground, installation of poles and transformers, etc. The crane is mounted on an undercarriage which is fitted with tyres. Rough terrain cranes are single-engine powered crane meaning that the same engine is used to power the crane and the movement of the undercarriage.
6. Loader cranes
These are hydraulic powered cranes fitted with an articulated arm to a trailer used for the loading and unloading of light and medium weights. These cranes are designed in such a way that its arm can be folded into multiple sections and can be utilized for setting length as per the applications and can be easily transported without any hassle.
