There are hundreds of crane-related accidents reported every year, many people working at the site get injured due to crane failure accidents. In most cases of crane accidents, human errors are the main reason behind them. The error may be due to bad communication, least concentration, improper handling, etc. To effectively handle the crane in the case of accidents, cranes and material handling equipments manufacturers develop a sudden responsive system but sometimes it is uncontrollable. The crane operator should be a good decision-maker in case of emergencies and shouldn’t operate the crane until and unless prepared with a backup plan to survive. If the operator is tired, sick, or sleepy, he should not enter the cabin.
As doctors say “precaution is better than cure”, the same applies to crane operation and handling. Since a crane is a heavy machine and deals with tonnes of loads with some people present at the site, it’s mandatory to operate a crane with precaution following standard safety protocols. Crane accidents take life and cause heavy financial loss to both the company along with delays in the project. At the construction site, the crane lifts different types of heavy loads. It’s important for the operators who are in charge of applying them to follow some safety protocols every time while using.
Cranes should be operated by only trained or experienced operator
In an under-constructed area, other people shouldn't be allowed who are not authorized to work. Don’t allow inexperienced operators to operate the crane. The only employees who should be allowed are those who have the proper training to work to control the crane. Any negligence or miscommunication in operating the cranes will lead to accidents.
Inspect the crane properly before use
Before climbing into the cabin of a construction crane, a crane operator should always observe the dashboard thoroughly. They should take a review of the protocols of the various cables and travel path to make sure they’re all in a good position to perform. Test the performance of the crane by picking up any load to some extent. If the load is too massive, a crane operator shouldn’t ever push a crane randomly beyond the bound of its limits. In case of the improper function of the crane call the nearest crane services to get it inspected.
Crane operation should be stopped when people working underneath
Construction sites are crowded sites. Workers always walk around or work on some works near under-constructed areas. Never operate a crane to lift while people work around it. In case, by mistake, someone drops something down towards the ground, people could be seriously injured or even killed.
Cranes shouldn’t be used in brutal weather
Never use a crane when it’s foggy, windy, rainy, immense thundering or snowy outside as it reduces the visibility and leads to miscommunication by signaling. If the weather is in inclement condition, operators might be not able to handle the crane-like they normally would. The weather could cause some kind of fatal incident. So, wait for the better condition of the weather and then use the crane
